Born in China, Jian Shang completed middle and high school at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. At the age of 15, he won first prize at the Shenyang Teenage Music Competition and was the principal chair in the conservatory orchestra. After graduating high school, Jian continued his studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he completed his Bachelor in Music Performance degree in the class of Zhen Su. While studying at the Central Conservatory, he won the principal position in the China Youth Orchestra and performed in many prestigious venues.
In 2014, Jian moved to the United States to continue his studies in violin & viola performance. He earned his Artist Diploma and Master’s in Music degrees with a full scholarship at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music, under the instruction of Professor Zoran Jakovcic as a graduate assistant. For over four years, while earning his degrees, Jian taught many young students at the Atlanta Music Academy. In 2019, Jian moved to Indiana for his Doctor of Arts Degree. He won the concerto competition while pursuing the Doctor of Arts degree at Ball State University. While studying in Ball State University, Jian was a teacher assistant in the studio. As a part of his job, Jian taught many undergraduate students and helped them have recitals and concerts.
Jian’s orchestral experience includes the Albany, Columbus (GA), Lagrange and Muncie Symphony Orchestras.
