Kodály Class

For the success of our academy students in their music development, William Pu Music Academy is offering special Kodály classes with Kodály method specialist Ms. Phyllis Sommer. Kodály method is a comprehensive program to train basic musical skills and to develop a complete musician through the finest musical experiences.

Group I Class:
For Lower elementary or younger
Dates: 3/12, 4/9, 4/23, 5/7
Time: 2:30-3:20 p.m.

Group II Class:
For Upper elementary to middle school
Dates: 3/12, 4/9/, 4/23, 5/7
Time: 4-4:50 p.m.
Fee: $100 for 4 sessions

The Kodály Method – Keys to Success for Children

  • It is cognitively and developmentally appropriate
  • It enhances creativity, reinforces aural skills, promotes visual literacy, and develops improvisational skills
  • It begins the foundation of beautiful singing and expressive movement
  • It integrates the development of problem solving, critical thinking, & collaboration – all necessary 21st Century Skills

Benefits for the Students

  • Exposure to instruction in the Kodály Method will strengthen the music literacy skills of all students allowing them to make connections between their aural learning and the written notation
  • Joyful expression is a natural result of the Kodály lesson. Curiosity and creativity are encouraged and desired. From this springboard, artistic expression can begin to grow.

Ms. Phyllis Sommer is the Early Elementary Division music specialist at Trinity School. She joined the Trinity faculty in 2013. Before coming to Trinity, Ms. Phyllis was the Lower School and Middle School choral director at Pace Academy for seven years. In addition, she has taught elementary music for 15 years at schools in California, Ohio, and Georgia. Ms. Phyllis received her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and Teacher Certification from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She continued her studies at Capital attending workshops and summer classes for extended training in the Kodály Method, a pedagogical method for teaching music literacy through fine singing. Ms. Phyllis is on the board of the local Kodály chapter, the Kodály Educators of Georgia, and has been a presenter at local workshops about the use of the Kodály Philosophy and Method in elementary schools.
